24 hours after killing a man, Customs officers shoot pregnant woman

Officials of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Thursday reportedly shot and injured a pregnant woman identified as Bukola Olugunna, at Iyana Iyesi, in Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Olugunna, who is carrying an eight-month pregnancy, was allegedly shot by the NCS operatives attached to the Federal Operation Unit, Ikeja, around 7.45am while on her way to the office.

She is a staff of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company.

This incident happened less than 24 hours after Customs operatives allegedly killed one person and injured three others on Wednesday at Abule Egba, in Lagos while in pursuit of a vehicle allegedly conveying smuggled bags of rice.

An eyewitness said the woman was hit by stray bullets on her back and the left side of her body.

He explained that the woman was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

When contacted, Public Relations Officer of the Customs Federal Operation Unit, Jerry Attah confirmed the incident to SHIPS & PORTS DAILY saying that the woman has been hospitalised and responding to treatment.
“The CGC compliance team were on a trail of a smuggled vehicle. They trailed the vehicle to Ota; at that point the guy drove to where his associates were. There were confrontations and they wanted to mob the officers so they fire shots in the air.
“In the process, the shell from the bullet hit one woman on the back and left shoulder and she sustained some injuries. She has been taken to a hospital in Ota where she is responding to treatment.
“The OC that led the team has gone to visit the woman to know how she is doing. I have also spoken with the woman and the doctor also confirmed that she is doing fine,” Attah said.

The Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Customs Area Command, Abdullahi Maiwada, also confirmed the incident but said the woman was “only brushed by stray bullets and not hit”.
