General Manager, Western Ports, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Chief Michael Ajayi has charged members of the newly constituted Apapa Joint Task Force on Traffic Control within the Apapa corridor to make meaningful contribution to solving traffic congestion within the area and not to worsen the already chaotic situation.
He charged members of the Joint Task force to ensure that in the discharge of their duties they are providing solution to the problem and not to be seen as adding to it.
Members of the Task Force are drawn from the Association of Maritime Transport Owners (AMATO), National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and the Joint Council of Seaport Transporters (JCOST).
Ajayi who was speaking last week when he received members of the Task Force in his office appealed to them not to engage in any activity which can be tantamount to indiscipline, threat to other constituted government agencies performing similar functions and must have zero tolerance to extortion and corruption.
“You can earn respect for yourself through your conduct. You must be seen to be disciplined, check the excesses of okada riders and truck drivers and you must have zero tolerance for extortion,” he said, urging them to work in harmony with the other traffic control outfits of the NPA, Nigerian Police and Lagos State government.
The Western Ports General Manager commended the leadership of AMATO under Chief Remi Ogungbemi for the new initiative with a view to solving the traffic problem within the Apapa corridor and assured that the NPA would support the initiative to ensure success.
AMATO Chairman, Chief Remi Ogungbemi who thanked the General Manager for the audience reiterated that the members of the task force would conduct themselves well and make positive impact in the traffic control within the Apapa corridor.
He also assured that the members would work within the confines of the law.
