Apapa Customs woos exporters, generates N136bn in 5 months

Compt. Jubril

Controller, Apapa Area command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Comptroller Musa Jubril has called on all prospective exporters of Made-In-Nigeria products and other raw materials to use the command for their exports.

Jubril who made the call while addressing journalists in Lagos last week, said that the command was ready more than ever before to facilitate export trade considering the economic state and the federal government’s efforts at diversifying the economy through encouragement of exportation of agricultural products.

He also said the command has put measures in place to facilitate ease of doing business.

Meanwhile, the command said it collected a total of N136billion between January and May; 2017.This is in addition to the sum of N1.8 billion recovered from infractions within the review period.

Jibrin added that the command in the month of May also surpassed its revenue target.

He said the revenue collected in the review period represents a 38.78% increase over the N98billion collected in the corresponding period last year, a feat he attributed to the proactive measures put in place through diligence and commitment by officers of the command.

The customs boss said the command would continue to intensify its efforts at blocking all revenue leakages in order to sustain and build on the result.

“This is an unprecedented feat in view of the present downturn of the economy with its myriads of challenges. I wish to reiterate our resolve to do our best to maintain our lead in revenue generation irrespective of the prevailing harsh economic conditions which is evidence by the low cargo throughput as well as drop in oil revenue. We are however committed to ensuring trade regulations and enforcement of government fiscal policies while issues of national security also remain cardinal in our day to day operations,” he said.

On anti-smuggling activities, the Comptroller said a total of 24 detentions were effected for various offences ranging from under invoicing, wrong classification, under payment and false declaration among others. The seized items include frozen fish, medicaments, pharmaceuticals, and unprocessed wood which he said falls under export prohibition amongst other general goods.
