The Tin Can Island II Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Lilypond, Ijora, Lagos said it experienced a lull in revenue collection in July due to the blocking of the terminal by security officials charged with the task of controlling the Apapa gridlock.
Speaking with newsmen in Lagos, Public Relations Officer of the command, Farouk Abubakar, said the command generated N1.497 billion July as against N2.407 billion collected the preceding month.
Abubakar said despite the activities of the task force, which he said halted operations for two weeks at the command; it was able to surpass its monthly target.
According to him, the command has a monthly target of N1.4 billion stating that the bulk of the revenue collected came from the Lekki Free Trade Zone.
“The Lagos State Taskforce deployed to Apapa to clear the traffic on wharf road made it impossible to generate more revenue because the terminal was completely blocked for close to two weeks.
“However, bulk of our revenue recorded in July came from Lekki Free Trade,” he said.
According to a document made available to newsmen, the command had so far collected N17.2 billion between January and July 2018.
