Global port terminal operator, APM Terminals on Thursday commissioned the Moín Container Terminal (MCT) in Limon province, Costa Rica.

The new container terminal will allow “Post Panamax” ships that can load up to 8,000 containers, three times the amount the state port service has so far been able to handle, to berth.

The terminal port built under a 30-year concession is part of a $1 billion investment 400 kilometres from the Panama Canal.

APM Terminals Chief Executive Officer, Morten Engelstoft said electric cranes at the MCT will cut the average time needed to service a ship from 40 to 15 hours.

The container port is expected to provide a major boost to trade in Costa Rica as well as increase competition for the Panama Canal.
