Immediate past Deputy President, Maritime Branch of the Senior Staff Association of Communication, Transport and Corporation (SSACTAC), Comrade Adegbeyeni Benson was on Thursday elected as the new President of the branch.
Adegbeyeni got 20 votes to defeat his rival and former Secretary of the branch, Comrade Akin Leosho who polled 17 votes at the association’s 10th triennial delegates’ conference held in Abuja.
Other elected officials include Adamu Yau – deputy president; Mrs K.N. Lar – first vice president; Mrs Mary Adewale – second vice president and Teminusi Henry – general secretary.
Others are Micahel Adamu – assistant general secretary; Emmanuel Fadumila – treasurer; Isa Mohammed – financial secretary; Joseph Olofu – public relations officer and Ofomor Emmanuel – auditor.
Agboola Samsudee, Idris Bulama and Okon Benjamin were elected as trustees while Lawan Adegoke emerged as branch adviser; Oni Babatope – ex-officio; Afolabi Babatunde – Lagos coordinator and Ibade Akpotareno – Delta/Eastern coordinator.
Speaking earlier on Wednesday at the formal opening of the triennial delegates’ conference, outgoing President of the SSACTAC Maritime Branch, Comrace Omeiza Umar, commended the management of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) for addressing the issues of aggrieved retired workers of the organisation and for seeing to the promotion of existing staff.
“It is our commitment to compliment the various management roles towards achieving greater heights in the industry and also to promote the welfare of our teeming members.
“In line with the above, management of NPA and in collaboration with our association addressed the issues of aggrieved 2008 retirees over their final terminal benefits, which have been paid completely.
“In the same vein, promotion of staffers of the authority have been carried out with the Managing Director’s directive that promotion exercise should be carried out twice a year in line with Federal Civil Service directive and we hope the next executive will pursue this.
“We seize this opportunity to appeal to management of NPA to finalise and implement the outstanding welfare issues to her employees,” Umar stated in his address at the event.
He also commended NPA and its workers for developing and deploying the electronic Ship Entry Notice and the e-payment platform which has enhanced service delivery and revenue of the organisation.
He said, “Recently the NPA management introduced e-SEN, i.e electronic ship entry notice developed by the ICT department of the organisation and put to reality without external input.
“As we salute management giant effort to achieve this, permit me to applaud the commitment of the NPA staffers to showcase their prowess in their respective department towards moving the organisation forward.”
Managing Director of NPA, Mallam Habib Abdullahi, who was represented at the conference by the General Manager Humar Resources, Mallam Abba Rufai, assured the workers that their welfare will remain a key priority of his administration.
He assured that while his management has done a lot to improve the lot of the workers, he will not hesitate to address other outstanding issues as soon as possible.
