Bulker collides with fishing boat off Malaysia

Bahamas-flagged bulk carrier M/V Venus, managed by Greece-based Super Eco Bulkers, collided with a fishing vessel on Tuesday, off the coast of Malaysia in the South China Sea.

The bulk carrier came in contact with a fishing boat named AMROS on starboard side on September 14, 2015 at 10:20 a.m., Super Eco Bulkers confirmed in a statement emailed to World Maritime News.

As informed, the bulker “immediately manoeuvred and returned to the area where it remained for further assistance.”

The vessel, built in 2012 by Cosco Zhoushan Shipyard in China, was loaded with 56,550 MT sand in bulk, and had no deficiencies, defects or damages prior to the incident. There were no damages on board M/V Venus as a result of the collision, Super Eco Bulkers said.

The ship was en route from Cambodia to Singapore when it collided with the fishing boat.

“The fishing boat was towed safely into the Malaysian Coast. Two fishermen who were aboard the fishing vessel were rescued by other fishing vessels in the vicinity. There were no casualties or missing persons from the fishing boat,” the statement reads.

According to Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), there were 30 crew members on board, based on the fishing boat’s registration.

The M/V Venus received instructions by the Malaysian Coast Guard to proceed to Pulau Kapas for investigation. As soon as the investigation was completed by the Malaysian Authorities, the vessel sailed towards its next destination, Singapore.
