Clearing agent in court for N3.6m fraud

Court sentences stowaway

A 59-year-old clearing agent, who allegedly obtained 700 cartons of Dettol soap worth N3,641,000 from a businessman under false pretense, was yesterday brought before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

The defendant, John Chuba, pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge of false pretense, intention to defraud and stealing.

The Prosecutor, Sergeant Balogun Adeniyi told the court that the defendant committed the offences sometime in November 2014 at Tin Can Island Port, Apapa.

He alleged that Chuba collected 700 cartons of Dettol soap valued N3,641,000 from the complainant, Anthony Egwu, with a promise to pay back after selling the soap, but failed to do so.

The alleged offences contravene Sections 409, 316 and 285 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The Magistrate, Mrs Oshin, in her ruling, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N250, 000 with one responsible surety.

She adjourned the case to May 5 for mention.
