Clearing agent docked over N2.5m fraud

Four docked for stealing items worth N.7m at Apapa port

For allegedly defrauding a man of N2.5 million on the pretext of investing the money in hides and skin business, Ejike Onyinye, a clearing agent was on Wednesday brought before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The 40 years old accused, a resident of Ejigbo, Lagos, is standing trial on charges of intent to defraud and stealing.

He, however, denied the charge.

ASP Roman Unuigbe, who is prosecuting the case, told the court that the accused committed the offences between May 26 and May 31, 2017, at Ejigbo.

Unuigbe said the complainant, Ibrahim Lukman, reported the incident at the Yaba Police Station.

The accused had on May 26, 2017, told the complainant that he was a clearing agent who intended going into the importation of hides and skin and that he needed some money for the business.

“The complainant gave the accused N2.5 million not knowing that there was no plan for any business.

“The accused took the money from the complainant and ran away,” Unuigbe alleged.

The offences contravened Sections 278 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Section 285 stipulates a three-year jail term for stealing while Section 314 provides 15 years for fraud.

The Magistrate, P.A. Ojo, in his ruling on the accused’s bail application, granted the clearing agent bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Ojo said the sureties must be gainfully employed with evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

In a separate case, a 45-year-old woman, Hannah Amaefia and her 19-year-old son, Chinonso Amaefia were on Wednesday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting the wife of a licensed customs agent, Ifeoma Linus Agada.
The prosecutor, Inspector Benedict Aigbokhan told the court that the defendants committed the offences on April 25, 2018 at about 5:30am at No 1, Silver Street, Olodi-Apapa.
Aigbokhan said, “The defendants unlawfully assaulted one Ifeoma Linus Agada by jointly beating her with fist blows on her chest and face.”
The prosecutor added that Chinonso used cutlass to cut the complainant’s face, which caused her harm.
According to him, the offences are punishable under section 411, 412, 172 and 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
Magistrate Nurudeen Layeni granted the defendants bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety. The surety must furnish the court with evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
He adjourned the case till May 22, 2018 for mention.
