A 36-year-old clearing agent, who allegedly obtained N410,000 on the pretext of assisting an importer clear his goods at the port, on Thursday appeared before an Apapa Magistrates ‘ Court, Lagos.
The clearing agent, Musa Abdullahi, a resident of Apapa area of Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of obtaining by false pretence and stealing.
The Prosecutor, Cpl. John Iberedem told the court that the accused committed the offences on March 18 at Tin Can Island Port, Apapa, Lagos.
Iberedem said that the accused fraudulently obtained the sum of N410,000 from Mr Segun Titus, on the pretext of assisting him to clear his goods.
He said that the accused did not clear the goods as promised and also refused to refund the money when it was demanded.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 312 stipulates 15 years imprisonment for anyone culpable of obtaining by false pretence.
However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Senior Magistrate, Mr Patrick Adekomaiya, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000, with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till Oct. 10 for mention
