A 31-year-old clearing agent, identified as Seosan Busayo Charles, was on Monday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly duping one woman of N590,000, meant for the payment of customs duty to clear her car from the port.
Charles is facing a two-count charge bordering on pretence and stealing.
The prosecutor, Iyabosa Onaiwu, told the court that the defendant committed the offences sometimes in the month of August 2017 at about 9am at Coconut, Olodi-Apapa.
“The defendant obtained the sum of N590,000 from one woman, identified as Oluwagbemi Lawrence with the pretext of clearing a car for her, a representation which he knew to be false,” Onaiwu said.
The prosecutor also said that the defendant stole the sum of N590,000 property of one Oluwagbemi Lawrence.
According to him, the offences are punishable under section 314 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
Magistrate, O.S Abioye granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with one surety.
The surety, according to the Magistrate, must be gainfully employed and furnish the court with proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
He adjourned the matter till September 20, 2018 for mention.
