Customs intercepts live ammunition at Tin Can port

Operatives of the Tin Can Island Port command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) have intercepted cache of ammunition in two separate operations carried out on Monday and Tuesday. 

Controller of the command, Comptroller Musa Abdulahi, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Uche Ejesieme, on Wednesday.

He said the first seizure, which was discovered at Terminal C operated by Sifax Group, involved a 40-feet container number TGHU 60143419.

He said on examination, the container was found to carry 150 rounds of live ammunition and 28 pieces of various sizes of jack knives.

According to the controller, “The items contravenes schedule A Absolute Import Prohibition List item 17 of the Common External Tariff and section 46 of the Customs and Excise Management Act Cap C45 LFN 2004.” 

Abdulahi said the suspect, container and the exhibit are currently being held at the enforcement unit of the command pending further investigation.

“In the same vein, the command during tally operations, while vehicles were being discharged from a vessel, MV Glovis Courage Voyage number 036 at 0330hours on July 10 at Five Star Logistics Terminal, a black bag was found in one unpacked Ford Edge with chassis number no 2FMDK48C98BA05947.

“On examination, the bag was found to contain 149 rounds of 38mm calibre live ammunition; 92 rounds of 9mm calibre live ammunition; two rounds of 7.62mm calibre live ammunition; 11 cartridges of live ammunition; 12 expended empty shells of various calibres and one empty magazine,” he said.
