One of the Customs officers attacked by suspected smugglers at Sango Ota, Ogun State last week is said to be in a critical condition and has undergone an emergency surgery.
It will be recalled that suspected smugglers attacked the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) officials on Tuesday, burning down their vehicle, after some contraband items were seized from the smugglers by a different Customs patrol team.
Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Customs Command, Abdulahi Maiwada told SHIPS & PORTS DAILY that the officer, an Assistant Superintendent of Customs (ASC1) Asakpa F.O was among three of the officers seriously injured during the attack.
He said the injuries sustained by the two other officers were not life-threatening.
“One of the officers was seriously injured in the attack and he just undertook a surgery at the Lagos Teaching Hospital where he is receiving treatment. The other officers were not seriously injured.
“One of the smugglers actually died but our officers only shot in the air to disperse the youth that tried to prevent them from carrying out their statutory function.
“The matter is still under investigation and it is only an autopsy that would tell us the cause of the man’s death,” he said.
