Five docked for assaulting policeman, clearing agent

Five men were on Monday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stabbing one Sergeant Elijah Isoh and a clearing agent, Ayomide Akikpeyo with broken bottle in Apapa. 

The men were Aluku Abe (34), Wasiu Aremu (30), Mayowa Owulabi (25), Shola Babalola (30) and Afis Saka (27). They are facing a three-count charge bothering on conspiracy and assault.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Rosemary Ehimegbe told the court that the defendants committed the offences on April 12, 2018 at Fidelity Roundabout, Commercial Road, Apapa.
She said, “The defendants assaulted one Ayomide Akikpeyo by stabbing him with a broken bottle on his head and causing him harm.”
Ehimegbe added that while Sergeant Isoh attached to Apapa Police Station was performing his lawful duty; the accused persons stabbed him with broken bottle on his head which caused him harm.
According to her, the offences are punishable under sections 411, 173 and 174(a)(b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
The first defendant, Abe, pleaded not guilty to the charges while the rest pleaded guilty.

In her ruling, Magistrate T. A Oladele granted the first defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.
She said the sureties must furnish the court with evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case till April 30, 3018 for mention for the first defendant and for facts and sentence for the other defendants.
