Five men were on Wednesday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly causing breach of peace at Apapa. The defendants were said to be members of a secret cult known as Aye.
The five men were identified as Qudus Tajudeen (19), Ibrahim Ramon (23), Augustine James (26), Teslim Babatunde (19) and Olasunkanmi Adefila (29).
The prosecutor, Sergeant Marvellous Ogbona told the court that the defendants committed the offence on February 21, 2018 at about 6:30am am at Ojuina Junction by Gaskiya Road, Ijora Badia, Apapa.
They had in their possession two daggers, substances suspected to be India hemp, cutlass, charms and other dangerous weapons.
Ogbona added that the defendants conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause the breach of peace by barricading the street and extorting money from people.
According to him, the offences contravened Sections 411, 43(1), 42(9), 329, 44(4), 411, 133(b) and 168(d) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.
However, all the defendants pleaded not guilty to the eight-count charge brought against them except the third defendant, James who pleaded guilty.
In his ruling, Magistrate Adenike Alaka granted all the defendants bail except the third defendant in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties each in like sum who must be a parent and a clergy.
She adjourned the third defendant’s case till March 12, 2018 for facts and sentencing while the remaining defendants will appear on March 26, 2018 for mention.
