The Corp Marshal, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Boboye Oyeyemi said his commission will begin clampdown on unlatched container laden trucks from today (Monday).
Oyeyemi who stated this on Friday on a radio program in Abuja said he would be relocating to Lagos on Monday to kick off the campaign.
According to him, starting from today, no truck should leave the ports without being latched properly to the truck.
He said, “I will relocate to Lagos from Monday to start arresting container laden trucks that are not latched properly to the trucks because they are killer trucks.
“Unlatched containers have taken many lives and it must not be allowed to continue without being checked.”
He also said that the truck drivers have turned themselves into ‘lords’ on the road and their impunity must be checked.
“There is lawlessness on the side of the truck drivers. They drive with impunity and terrorise other road users on the road, this must stop,” he said.
Giving instances where truck drivers’ lawlessness has led to loss of lives, he said, “Over 11 lives of undergraduates of Olabisi Onabanjo university (OOU), Ago Iwoye, Ogun State was terminated prematurely.
“If the container laden truck was properly latched, the death would not have occurred and promising life would not have been lost.”
Oyeyemi also stated that union leaders in the haulage sector had been informed about the clampdown on unlatched containers.
“We have met with the leadership of all the unions in the sector and we have informed them why there must be sanity in the haulage system. We have met Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO), National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) and other stakeholders in the haulage sector to sensitize them on why their members must latch their trucks,” he said.
