FRSC imposes N10,000 fine on motorists for overloading

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) will fine motorists N10,000 for overloading, officials have said.

The Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi had earlier flagged off end of the year special patrol and ember months campaign in Kaduna to ensure accident free roads particularly on major highways in the state.

The Kaduna state Sector Commander of the (FRSC) Corps Commander Umar Ibrahim said overloading, road violation, reckless driving and non compliance to the installation of speed limiting device; especially by commercial vehicles as leading causes of accidents on Kaduna roads.

“Some of the commercial drivers who carry overload hide somewhere until after 6pm when the men of the FRSC are no longer on the road. We normally leave the road when it starts getting dark because we don’t bear arms but these violators are taking advantage of that. There is no single day we don’t arrest vehicles for overloading,” he said.

“We are also stopping passengers from sitting on top of overloaded trailer because the risk involved is enormous and that is why we are on the roads sensitizing and enforcing measures to reduce road crashes before, during and after the yuletide,” he said.

While he stated that road safety has no immunity; he threatened that his men would arrest and fine anybody that violates the law including uniform men and influential members of the society. “The constitution has given us the mandate to save lives and properties on Nigerian roads,” he stressed.

As part of the ember month campaign, Ibrahim said he would be visiting churches and mosques with a view to talk to worshipers on the need to be careful on the road as well as to sensitize them on the need for the speed limiting device.
