To boost the export of local produce from Nigeria, a Lagos-based packaging expert has harped on the need for an understanding of both the European and Asian markets.
The expert, Akin Arowolo, said at a forum on food packaging and container dressing organised in collaboration with the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) last weekend that Nigerian exporters must pay attention to quality food processing and packaging.
He advised exporters to use specialized packaging materials to minimise damage and enhance the performance and quality of their products.
“There is a big gap in the quality of what is expected by Europeans and Asian markets who are the big players in importing agricultural products from Africa. That is what this forum is focused on. The forum is seeking an opportunity to set up discussions between exporters, shippers and between the makers of these packaging materials to make sure that whatever they are sending to Europe or Asia gets there in good condition because they would have used the right material,” he said.
He added: “If our packaging is well structured and government agencies such as the Nigerian Shippers Council are properly positioned to establish market relationship with other countries overseas, then it will be easier for exporters to enjoy good business.”
