Container throughput at the Port of Hong Kong plunged 7.3% in September, falling to 1.79 million TEU from 1.93 million TEU in September 2013.
Month-on-month volumes also fell from the 1.88 million boxes moved in August.
The bulk of the falls came from the midstream operators sector, with volumes at the non-Kwai Tsing terminals falling 26.5% to 370,000 TEU from 503,000 TEU previously.
Throughput at the main Kwai Tsing terminals saw a more muted fall of just 0.5% or around 700,000 TEU to 1.42 million TEU.
This trend is repeated in the cumulative figures, with year-to-date volume rising 1.5% to 16.80 million TEU while volumes at non-Kwai Tsing terminals fell 12.2% to 3.4 million TEU.
