Imposition of fines not solution to Apapa traffic chaos

The Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO) has said that only the construction of a befitting truck terminal will solve the perennial traffic chaos at Apapa and environs.
AMATO Chairman, Chief Remi Ogungbemi, stated this in a message he sent to the Minister of Transport, Senator Idris Umar, and copied SHIPS & PORTS DAILY.

“Task force dislodging and displacing truckers and imposition of fines are no solution but mere rip off thereby destroying the road haulage system. This is the type of policy that destroyed the rail system,” Ogungbemi stated.
He charged the Minister: “Honourable Minister, this is my fourth decade in the port industry as a trucker. My wish/prayer for the port is orderliness, sanity and conducive operational environment. It is achievable with the necessary infrastructure in place: truck terminal. We’ve located places as per documents forwarded to you tagged option ‘A’ and ‘B’. The distance is two kilometres to Apapa/Tin-Can ports. Please help us to achieve this during your tenure. It will remain a legacy.”
