Magistrate Nurudeen Layeni of the Apapa Magistrates’ Court sitting in Lagos on Thursday started the trial of one Isiaka Shuaibu for allegedly assaulting two police officers and calling a policewoman prostitute in Apapa.
Shuaibu is facing a two-count charge bothering on breach of peace and assault.
The prosecutor, Inspector Edet Ekpo told the court that the defendant committed the offences on April 23, 2018 at about 9:10am at Tolu Police Station, Olodi-Apapa.
“The defendant did unlawfully and violently conducted himself in a manner likely to cause the breach of peace by calling policewoman, one Sergeant Anthonia Uzoigwe a prostitute in the Station charge room,” Ekpo said.
The prosecutor added that the defendant did unlawfully assaulted Supol Raphael Nwabueze SP and Sergeant Jimoh Omoyi by holding them on the shirt with intent to prevent the lawful detention of one Hassan and wilfully obstruct the two police officers while on their lawful duty.
According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 168(1)(d) and 174(a)(b) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
The Magistrate had previously granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum. The sureties, according to the Magistrate must furnish the court with proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government. One of the sureties must be a blood relation to the defendant.
He adjourned the case till June 28, 2018 for continuation of trial.
