Man docked for stealing phone inside port

Court sentences stowaway

A 20-year-old, Yinusa Umaru, was yesterday charged before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing one Tecno M6 worth N29,000.

The defendant allegedly stole the Tecno M6, which belongs to one Abbass Umaru.

The defendant is facing a three-count charge of stealing, falsehood and entering the port quays without port pass.

The prosecutor, Alexander Esebamen, told the court that in addition to stealing the phone, the defendant paraded himself to be a factory worker at Dangote, knowing same to be false. He also reportedly entered into the port without a Nigerian Ports Authority pass.

He said the offences were committed at about 5:30pm on February 19 at Dangote Sugar Refinery inside the Lagos Ports Complex, Apapa.

According to Esebamen, the offences contravened Sections 285(1), 378(1) and 398(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge.

The Magistrate, Mr T. A. Babalola, granted the accused bail in the sum of N20,000 with one surety.

The case was adjourned to March 6 for mention.
