The Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron, Akwa Ibom State has held a workshop on conformity to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).
The workshop, according to the academy, was to demonstrate its desire and readiness to conform itself to the high standards and expectations identifiable with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
The two-day workshop was on the 2010 Manila Amendments to the STCW Convention organised for management and academic staff of the institute.
Resource persons for the training were drawn from the academy and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
Declaring the workshop open, Rector of the institution, Joshua Okpo, enjoined participants to take advantage of the workshop and quality of the resource persons in order to improve on themselves as well as add required value to the quality of their lectures, thereby fulfilling management’s quest to reposition the academy to international standards.
“MAN Oron cannot be left behind in the 21st century. We must meet and sustain the high standards expected of us in the international system, and the time to start is now,” Okpo said.
The objectives of the workshop include educating the academy’s management staff and relevant faculty personnel on the amendments to the STCW’ 78 convention and the important date for their implementation as well as encouraging participants to identify the different amendments to the convention.
Over 120 management and academic staff of the school attended the workshop.
