Minister of Transport, Senator Idris Umar, has identified the flaws in Nigeria’s freight forwarding system as a major cause of congestion in the nation’s ports.
The transport minister, during his speech at the opening ceremony of the just concluded NIMAREX 2013, said that his recent deliberations with stakeholders in the industry showed that until the practice of freight forwarding in Nigeria is regulated, the problem of congestion in the ports will not be solved.
“In spite of the successes recorded, government is seriously concerned about the problem of congestion in our ports which is impacting negatively on clearing and movement of cargoes. To this I recently convened a stakeholders meeting where it was observed that certain measures must be taken that include among others, the urgent need to professionalize the practice of freight forwarding in accordance with the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN) Act 2007,” he said.
