Fashola visits scene, calls for relocation of tank farms
• NIMASA denies fire outbreak @ offices

Lagos State Governior Babatunde Raji Fashola yesterday visited the scene of Wednesday’s inferno at the MRS Jetty, Tin-Can Island Port Complex (TCIPC), Apapa, Lagos, and made a passionate call for the relocation of tank farms away from residential areas.
Also, in the wake of the MRS Jetty inferno, the nation’s apex maritime regulatory organ, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has stoutly denied that its headquarters, MARITIME HOUSE, located at Burma Road, Apapa, Lagos, as well as its other offices in other locations in Apapa had been gutted by fire.

The NIMASA Head, Public Affairs, Hajiya Lami Tumaka, stated in a press release, a copy of which was made available to SHIPS & PORTS DAILY, that stakeholders and the general public should “disregard recent information being circulated by faceless individuals suggesting that the head office of the Agency had been gutted by fire.”
Tumaka stated: “The Agency had received a report of an explosion involving a tanker ship laden with petroleum products, anchored at the.jetty of one of Nigeria’s petroleum marketing companies within Apapa business district.
“The vibration effect of the explosion momentarily affected business activities in the Agency and other high rise buildings within the Apapa business district.

Officers of the Agency were drafted immediately to join the fire control team of the petroleum marketer and other agencies who were on hand to provide emergency services.
“Preliminary investigations have commenced and more information on the explosion will be made public in due course.
“The Agency’s business offices at Burma Road; Marine Road, GRA; and Kirikiri, situated in Apapa are not affected by the unfortunate fire outbreak.”
