Naval rating killed, another missing in boat mishap

Two naval ratings attached to the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Delta, Warri, were yesterday confirmed missing after one of the base’s gunboats reportedly capsized in the Escravos area of Warri South-West council area of Delta State.

A senior naval officer, who preferred to be anonymous  that one body had been found.

The duo went missing after one of the base’s gunboats was involved in a mishap at a bay around Escravos. Efforts to get both the Commander of the NNS Delta, Commodore Raimi Mohammed and the Base Information Officer of the NNS Delta, Lieutenant Lamu, were unsuccessful.

However, other sources confirmed there was a boat mishap in Escravos area, involving one of the base’s gunboats.

According to one of the sources, one person was confirmed dead, while another was still missing as at the time of filing this report. Another source, however said two persons were still missing, while no death had been recorded.

“No, it was not any attack, one of our boats, during one of our operations in the Escravos area, lost control and hit the shore. One person was said to be dead, while another is still missing’, the first source said.

A second source, also very reliable, however said there was no death yet, but two personnel on the boat involved in the accident were still missing.

“No. There is no record of death, I am very much in touch with happenings on the base and the information is that two of the personnel on the boat are still missing, but search is still on”, the source said.
