The Cross River State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested a suspect, Kelechi Amaka, with 6.3kg of cocaine valued at N75m.
Amaka, an Imo State indegene based in Cameroon, was arrested at the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) jetty in Calabar on his way from Cameroon.
Parading the suspect at the office of the NDLEA in Calabar, the state Commander of the agency, Kayode Adeniyi, said the drugs were concealed in six factory sealed ladies hand bags and kept in a leather box.
The NDLEA boss added that, attempts to smuggle the drug into Nigeria failed as the suspect was intercepted by NDLEA officers on operation at the NIWA Jetty.
He stressed that the arrest was the largest singular one with respect to category ‘A’ drug ever made by the Cross River State Command.
“Few days ago, as a result of our painstaking efforts towards effective operations, the command arrested one Kelechi Amaka, male, 26 years old, a Nigerian at the Inland waterways jetty Calabar. He was caught with 6.3 kilograms of cocaine,” he said.
According to him, the most trafficked drug in this part of the country has been cannabis sativa popularly known as Indian hemp.
He said, “No doubt the most commonly trafficked drugs is cannabis sativa popularly known as hemp which is given appellations locally. Nowadays, we have discovered the influx of cocaine and heroin into the illicit drug market in Calabar and its environs.”
The suspect who is still in the custody of NDLEA said that he was acting on instructions from his boss in Cameroon to deliver the female hand bags to someone in Nigeria.
He said he had no knowledge of the contents hidden inside.
