The new Port Manager, Calabar Port, Engr. Musa Wada, has promised to ensure that the port achieves its optimal utilisation.
This, according to him, could be realised by pursuing the total dredging of Calabar Port’s 84-kilometre-long channel, considering the fact that the port is critical to the economic buoyancy of the state and the nation.
Wada, who dropped this hint at the special luncheon/interactive session with members of the media in Calabar, said that “my mandate of coming to Calabar is to make this port work, and I am taking this assignment seriously; since I consider it to be critical to the economic buoyancy of this state and the our great nation.”
He said: “An efficient and vibrant Calabar Port will help the Tinapa project, Calabar Free Trade Zone as well as create more jobs for our teeming jobless youths.
“Dredging of the port is already on the 2013 budget; it has been advertised and surely ready for construction and I think this is a positive development and a clear departure from the past.”
Appealing for cooperation and partnership from the media in the task of reactivating the Calabar Port, he said that, in a bid to reposition the ports across the country for greater efficiency and enhanced productivity, the central management of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) made a number of changes at the top, thus posting him to Calabar as a manager.
Wada, who has since assumed duties, also promised to “improve upon staff welfare; make case for the improvement of other complementary infrastructures such as link roads to the hinterlands, re-engineer operation and documentation process.”
