The Acting President of Nigerian Shipowners’ Association (NISA), Aminu Umar has asked members of the association to disregard a purported general meeting called by the association’s former president, Niyi Labinjo.
The NISA Acting President, while speaking exclusively with SHIPS & PORTS DAILY yesterday said the meeting was a meeting between some friends of the former President and not members of the association.
“We have asked all NISA members to disregard the call for the general assembly. But if some personal friends want to meet with him that is his own personal arrangements and not on behalf of NISA.
He said the meeting is null and void and not regonised by the leadership of the association.
“We have not called for any meeting for now. We won’t attend the meeting and none of the executive members will attend. Capt. Labinjo was calling for NISA general assembly and we are not in support because he is has ceased to be the president until he clears his name with the anti-graft agency (EFCC).”
Also speaking, General Secretary of the association, Tunji Brown corroborated the position of the Acting President.
Brown’s words, “He (Labinjo) asked me to call a general meeting and I told him I won’t until he clears his name with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
“None of us is attending and I told him I won’t call any meeting until he resolves his issue, no NISA executive will attend the meeting because he has ceased to be the president of the association.”
It would be recalled that the executive of the association had last week said Capt. Labinjo ceased to represent the association until he clears his name over the ship purchase scandal involving him and an indigenous shipping firm, Accenk Maritime and Energy Services Limited.
Acting President of the association, Aminu Umar during a chat with newsmen in Lagos on Monday last week said the executives of the association unanimously asked Labinjo to step aside.
