NIWA embarks on safety awareness campaign in Ondo, Lagos

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) will continue the second phase of its National Safety and Awareness Campaign in Igbokoda, Ondo State and in Marina, Lagos State.

NIWA will organise a town hall meeting in Igbokoda at the Niger Delta Development Commission Jetty next week Tuesday and at the NIWA ferry terminal, CMS, Lagos on Wednesday.

NIWA General Manager Public Affairs, Bello Fadile said that during the town hall meetings, the marine department of the organisation will educate waterways and boat users on the need to always wear a life jacket and how to make use of a life jacket.

“Other safety rules and regulations will be explained to the stakeholders at the event, while hundreds of life jackets and other informative materials will be given out free to boat users by the Authority.

“This safety campaign is all in an effort to stem the unfortunate frequent boat mishaps that were reported in Niger and Lagos States recently.

“It will be recalled that the Management of the Authority visited Malele and Nupeko riverine areas in Niger State for similar campaign recently. The Management of the Authority explained that the awareness campaign will be carried out in all the six geographical zones of the country eventually,” Fadile stated in a press statement sent to SHIPS & PORTS DAILY.
