NPA worker in court for breach of peace

Four docked for stealing items worth N.7m at Apapa port

A 42-year-old Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) worker, identified as Tijani Hassan, was on Monday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly attempting to cause the escape of suspects detained in a cell.

Hassan was also accused of breaking the front windscreen of a bus and is facing a two-count charge of breach of peace and damage.

The prosecutor, Inspector Edet Ekpo told the court that the defendant committed the offence on April 21, 2018 at about 11:50am at Cardoso Street, Kirikiri Town, Apapa.

He said, “The defendant used his hand to break the front windscreen of a Toyota bus with registration number AAA 922 XT which value N30,000 property of one Okoro Onyeahi.”

Ekpo also told the court that at about 2pm in Kirikiri Police Station, Kirikiri Town, Apapa, the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by shouting, insulting and shaking the cell gate of the station with intention to permit escape of suspects detained in the cell.

According to him, the offences are punishable under section 339 and 166(1) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.

The defendant however pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

The Magistrate, N.A Layeni granted the defendant bail in the sum of N20,000 with one surety. The surety must also furnish the court with proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

He adjourned the case till May 4, 2018 for mention.
