Oil theft: Navy acquires Israeli surveillance system

The Nigerian Navy has acquired Israeli-installed mass civil surveillance system to enable it monitor and track suspected crude oil theft and other illegal activities at sea.

The system known as Falcon Eye would enable the navy to monitor the movement of vessels within the country’s territorial waters and the Gulf of Guinea to enable the tracking and arrest of vessels operating illegally.

Speaking at the inaugural lecture, held at NNS Quorra Apapa, the former Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Francis Akpan (rtd) said that the Falcon Eye would assist in monitoring, tracking and collation of maritime activities to protect national interest.

Akpan said that the system would analyze and share information with stakeholders.

He said that maritime security is the responsibility of major stakeholders within the maritime community.

The Falcon Eye will provide a centre where the activities within the exclusive economic zone would be monitored and those who contravene laws would be identified.
