Pirates kidnap 22 crewmembers from ship anchored off Benin

UK-based tanker owner and operator Union Maritime confirmed that 22 crew member from its vessel MT Barrett were kidnapped by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea on January 10.

The company lost contact with the Marshall Islands-registered ship, which was at anchor off Benin Republic on January 9.

“Our primary concern remains the 22 crew on board and ensuring their safety,” the shipping firm said.

Union Maritime said that it continues to work with all relevant parties to ensure the situation is resolved successfully and as quickly as possible.

The shipping firm added that it regularly operates from ports in this region and has a rigorous safety and security protocol.

Furthermore, the company said that crews are repeatedly drilled in all safety and emergency procedures.
