The House of Representatives on Wednesday resolved to investigate those who looted over N60 billion belonging to the defunct Nigeria Airways as revealed by the Justice Obiora Nwazota Commission of Enquiry in 2002.
An ad-hoc committee, which is yet to be constituted, would also unravel the identities of persons indicted by the Commission’s white paper.
The resolution followed a motion by James Faleke (APC, Lagos) on the “urgent need to investigate the Justice Obiora Nwazota Commission of Enquiry into the operations of the defunct Nigeria Airways.”
Faleke recalled that the Commission, set up by President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2002, had turned in a whitepaper, which revealed mindless looting to the tune of N60 billion.
The whitepaper, he added, was approved by the Federal Government, which directed the Federal Ministry of Finance and the police to recover the stolen funds and prosecute the indicted culprits.
“Till date, nothing has been heard of the report and those indicted are believed to be largely visible while the ex-workers, denied of their legitimate entitlements, continue to languish in abject poverty,” Faleke submitted.
President Muhammadu Buhari recently directed the payment of 50% of the entitlements of ex-workers of the defunct Nigeria Airways, totalling N22.5 billion.
According to Federal Government sources, the remaining 50% in same amount is expected to be paid in 2019 as a result of paucity of funds.
