Reps probe rice importation

The? House Representatives yesterday ordered an investigation into the activities of companies importing rice into the country in breach of the Federal Government’s local production policy.

The House noted that the companies had not only exceeded their approved quota but also owed the government N28.3billion in duties.

Leading the debate on the issue, a representative from Kaduna State, Simon Arabo, mentioned Stallion Group, Popular Foods and Olam Nigeria Limited as some of the companies.

He said? Stallion Group and Popular Foods, had an unpaid N15billion import duty standing against them

He added that these companies, in spite of that went ahead to import additional 85,000 metric tonnes of the commodity.
