Worried by the damage to the environment and the access road to their community by operators of tank farms, residents of Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State have called on the Federal and Lagos State Governments to intervene without further delay.
They want the government to address the environmental degradation and the damage done to the road by tanker drivers, who load petroleum products daily at the depots.
The residents under the aegis of Ibasa- Ijegun-Egba Concerned Youth Movement made the appeal at a news conference on Tuesday in Lagos.
President of the movement, Kareem Idowu, lamented that the tank-farm operators in the community had made life unbearable for the residents.
Idowu noted that the only access road leading to the community was in a deplorable condition because of the tankers that ply the road daily.
“We, on behalf of the community, appeal to the federal and the state government to save us from the activities of the tank farms operators. “The road leading to our community is in bad condition and our water has been polluted.
“This has sent some of the indigenes who are fishermen out of business,” he said.
Idowu regretted that in spite of the huge business activities at the tank farms in the area, indigenes were not given jobs.
He said efforts by the movement to ensure that the operators repaired the roads were unsuccessful.
Idowu recalled that a peaceful protest was embarked upon by the youth on Dec. 21, 2015 to draw attention to the condition of the community.
