Senate sets to increase revenue allocation to MAN, Oron

For the Management of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron, the recent visit by the Senate Committee on Marine Transport left a lot for them to be happy as the committee said it is working tirelessly to ensure that statutory allocation to the academy is reviewed upward.

Chairman of the Committee, Senator Zaynab Kure, said as the academy may have entered its final stage of its transformation from diploma to a degree awarding institution, there should be an upward review of its five percent statutory allocation.

The Nigeria maritime Administration and safety agency (NIMASA) Act 2007 cedes five percent of the agency’s total annual revenue as statutory source of funding for the academy.

“Though then Senate Committee on Marine Transport pushed for upward review of the five percent statutory allocation from NIMASA to the academy but that did not succeed. However, the committee will continue to push further on increasing the statutory allocation to the academy by NIMASA,” she said.
She also noted that with the support of the committee, the academy got approval for the N2 billion intervention fund from NIMASA, out of which N1 billion has already been released.
She also assured that certificate transforming MAN Oron to a degree awarding institution will be would be received soon.

She commended the Rector of the academy, Joshua Okpo, for the pace of development that has taken place since he assumed office.
