The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has said that it is going to partner with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) in coming up with a mechanism that will check delays in cargo clearance at the nation’s seaport.
Deputy Director Compliance Monitoring of the NSC, Cajethan Agu who disclosed this at a forum in Lagos recently said the mechanism is expected to monitor the operational activities of service providers and other government agencies at the ports with a view to identifying delays and operational lapses.
“We are trying as much as possible to come up with some activities, measures and programmes that will improve on the port sector. For now, we are embarking on some automation initiatives and some of these automation initiatives that will bring added value to the maritime sector include the Port Service Support Portal which is expected to provide an online complaints handling.
“What this entails is that stakeholders can stay at the comfort of their offices and complain online to the Nigerian Shippers’ Council. We will also handle the complaint online and give feedback to the complainants,” he said.
Agu said NSC was also making some efforts to revive its relationship with port service providers, explaining that the essence of reviving the relationship was to strengthen the council and ensure industrial harmony.
