Ship’s crane kills dockworker, injures two others at Tin Can Port

A dockworker was killed while two others were injured yesterday at the Tin Can Island Port Complex (TCIPC) as the derrick of a ship, the MV Atlantic, snapped while discharging iron rods.
The derrick is a crane with a movable pivoted arm for moving or lifting heavy weights on a ship.
SHIPS & PORTS DAILY gathered that some of the iron rods being discharged fell on the three dockworkers that were assisting in the process of discharging the cargoes killing one instantly and injuring two.

The accident, which occurred at the Port & Cargo Terminal, led the terminal operator to suspend operation for the rest of the day.
Usually authoritative sources told SHIPS & PORTS DAILY that but for the swift rescue effort of the Port & Cargo safety and security team, more casualties would have been recorded.
The two injured dockworkers were said to have been rushed to an undisclosed hospital in Apapa where they are receiving medical attention.
Manager Corporate Affairs of Sifax Group owners of the Port & Cargo Terminal, Oliver Omajuwa, described the accident was unfortunate.
He said the family of the deceased dockworker will be duly compensated while adequate medical treatment will be given to the injured.
