Singapore port authority alerts ships to reduced visibility

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has warned of reduced visibility in the Singapore Strait and port waters since Monday due to haze.

The local port authority has advised shipmaters to maintain proper lookout and navigate with caution during such periods of restricted visibility.

The shipmasters are also told to comply with international regulations pertaining to preventing collisions at sea and rules concerning conduct of vessels in low visibility, and exhibition of navigation lights and sound signals.

The presence of haze in Singapore is due to prevailing winds blowing from Sumatra, Indonesia. Forest fires were detected mainly in central and southern Sumatra.
