Stowaways bag three months jail sentence

An Apapa Magistrates’ Court sitting in Lagos on Wednesday sentenced three stowaways namely, Henry Eluemezie, John Eje and Samson Erukubami, to three months imprisonment for boarding a vessel without purchasing ticket at the Tin Can Island Port.

Magistrate M.O Olubi gave the judgement after the port prosecutor, Sergeant Adeniyi Balogun, gave the facts of the case.

According to Balogun, the stowaways were facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and illegal boarding of vessel.

The port prosecutor told the court that the defendants committed the offences on January 7, 2019 at Tin-Can Island port, Apapa.

“The defendants conspired together with others at large and without purchasing ticket or being a passenger of a ship entered MV Glovis Century Vessel with the intention of traveling to Europe,” Balogun said.

According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 412 and 400 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

The defendants pleaded guilty to the charges brought against them.

Magistrate M.O Olubi sentenced the accused to three months imprisonment from the date of arraignment.
