The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) says it has placed tyres under “life endangering items,” and enjoined Nigerians to always use good quality tyres for their safety.
The Director General of SON, Osita Aboloma, made the disclosure in Enugu at a one-day sensitization forum on the use of substandard tyres and its implications.
Aboloma warned against the importation, marketing, supply and use of substandard tyres in the country, emphasizing that the products kill and also affect the country’s economy adversely.
Represented on the occasion by the SON Regional Coordinator for South-East zone, Engr David Obi, the DG said that the task before the SON was to change the attitude of “importing, supply, marketing or using substandard tyres,” adding, “Market and use only good quality tyres.”
According to the SON boss, the use of tyres extended to all walks of life and touched on most of people’s daily activities, hence “it is important and necessary that everybody/stakeholder be aware of substandard tyre products.”
Aboloma said: “The SON will continue to inform you on standards while dealers should abide by the standards requirements. Let us join hands and improve on our life through standardization.”
He added that the forum was in continuation of SON’s nationwide campaign against substandard products, pointing out that already the campaign had been witnessed in different parts of the six geo-political zones of the country.
