An Apapa Magistrates’ Court yesterday in Lagos granted bail in the sum of N20,000 to a tanker driver, Sanni Basiru Jino, for allegedly being the cause of multiple vehicle accidents.

The Magistrate, Mr T.A. Babalola, who gave the ruling, also ordered the accused to produce a surety who must provide evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government as part of the bail conditions.

Jino, 32, who drove one Iveco Petroleum Tanker Truck with registration no KTN 258 YZ, pleaded not guilty to the seven-count charges.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Alexander Esebamen told the court that the tanker driver drove in a manner which was dangerous and caused bodily harm to one Kawu Umoru, 20, who resides at 33, Okoduwa Street, Kirikiri Town, Lagos.

In the process, the truck driver allegedly caused serious damage to the shock absorber, chassis, rear light and body parts of one Bajaj Motorcycle with registration no EPE 263 QH property of one Andrasu Gazawa worth N150,000.

Jino was also accused of not reporting the accidents, abandoning the vehicle on the highway, failing to position plate number in the front and back and driving without a driver’s licence.

The prosecutor said the defendant committed the offences along Kirikiri bridge, at about 1:00p.m. on February 19.

Esebamen noted that the offences contravened Section 28, 23(1), 19(1), 23(d), 36(1), 18 and 7(1) of the Road Traffic Laws of Lagos State.

The case was adjourned to February 27 for mention.
