Three men were arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court 8 on Thursday for allegedly assaulting a police officer and Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) security officials while executing their lawful duties.
The three men were identified as Kabiru Aliya, Oladeji Sunday and Isa Amadu. They pleaded not guilty to the five-count charges bothering on assault, stealing, conspiracy and obstruction.
The prosecuting counsel, Sergeant Adeniyi Balogun told the court that the three defendants committed the offences on June 15, 2017 at about 9:50am at Creek Road, Apapa.
He said they obstructed Sergeant Idris Abubakar attached to the Apapa Ports Police Divisional Headquarters and one NPA security staff, Charles Agbake at their duty post.
Balogun added that they assaulted both officers by using sticks, iron and stones to hit them on their heads, hands and other parts of their body which caused them injuries.
“All these were done to prevent or resist lawful arrest,” he said.
The prosecutor also said the three defendants stole one Infinix phone valued at N35,000; one wrist watch valued at N2,500 and one police beret valued at N1,500, property of Sergeant Idris Abubakar.
The offences contravened sections 409,112,171(b), 172 (a)(b)(f) and 287(5/a) criminal laws of Lagos State, 2011.
The Magistrate, Mr. T.O Babalola granted the defendants bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties each in like sum.
The case was adjourned till July 21, 2017 for mention.
