Train collision kills 3, injures 300 in South Africa

Three people were confirmed dead and over 300 injured after two trains collided at Mountain View station, in Pretoria, South Africa on Tuesday morning.

The collision left 82 passengers with serious injuries.

The spokesperson for Metrorail, the company that operates the train service, Lillian Mofokeng, said the crash which occurred at 9:30 a.m. (07:30 GMT) was as a result of both trains travelling in the same direction and on the same track.

“Most unfortunately as a result of the collision and the impact, we had three fatalities from this accident and more than 300 people that were seen by emergency services, Mofokeng told reporters.

She said Metrorail was instituting an investigation into what happened.

In October, 320 people were injured after a packed train travelling from Johannesburg to Pretoria crashed into the back of a stationary train.
