Truck driver allegedly steals 30 tons of cashew nuts

Four docked for stealing items worth N.7m at Apapa port
A 37-year-old truck driver, Taiwo Segun was on Thursday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a truck loaded with 30 tons of cashew nuts worth N27 million at Apapa and a truck worth N10 million.
Segun is facing a two-count charge bothering on conspiracy and stealing.

The prosecutor, Inspector Asu Feddy told the court that the defendant committed the offences on April 6, 2018 at about 7pm at Apapa.

He said, “The defendant conspired and stole 30 tons of cashew nuts with 40ft container valued at N27 million and Mack Truck with registration number XS 110 MUS valued at N10 million properties of BSJ Global Limited and Sky Express Nigeria Limited respectively.”

According to him, the offences are punishable under section 411 and 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.

The defendant however pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.

The Magistrate, Mukaila Fadeyi granted the defendant bail in the sum of one million naira with two sureties in like sum.

He said the sureties must be gainfully employed with proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government and proof of residence in Lagos State. One of the sureties must be a civil servant in Lagos State not less than level 08.

He adjourned the case till May 14, 2018 for mention.
