Truck driver kills two along Apapa/Oshodi Expressway

Four docked for stealing items worth N.7m at Apapa port

A 27-year-old truck driver, Aliu Babatunde has been arraigned by the police before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly driving recklessly and killing two persons along Appa/Oshodi Expressway, Lagos.

Babatunde is facing a three-count charge bothering on reckless driving, driving one-way and causing the death of two persons.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Marvellous Ogbona told the court that the defendant committed the offence on February 22, 2018 at about 10am at Coconut bus stop, along Apapa/Oshodi Expressway, Olodi Apapa.

He said, “The defendant, being the driver in charge of Iveco truck with registration number GGE 187 XS, drove same vehicle on a public highway in a manner which was reckless and dangerous to the public by driving in a direction prohibited by the Road Traffic Law which caused the death of one Abdullahi Sulaimon (M) and one Arinze Ugah (M).”

According to the prosecutor, the offences are punishable under Lagos State Traffic Law No 4, Vol 45, (9) (1) and (20), Laws of Lagos State Official Gazette 2012.

Magistrate Adenike Alaka granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties.

She adjourned the case till April 10, 2018 for mention.

In a separate development, two haulage drivers, identified as Mutairu Lukman (32) and Hanopi Ibrahim (20) were on Friday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly engaging themselves in a free for all fight at GMT Haulage Transport Company.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Marvellous Ogbona told the court that the defendants committed the offence on April 4, 2018 at about 12:30am at GMT Haulage Transport Company, Kirikiri Town, Apapa.

He said, “The defendants unlawfully engaged themselves in a free for all fight in the company.”

According to him, the offence is punishable under section 54 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge against them.

Magistrate K.A Ariyo granted the defendants bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety each. The surety, she said, must be related by blood to the defendants who must also furnish the court with evidence of tax remittance to the Lagos State Government.

The Magistrate added that the address of the surety should be verified by the prosecutor. She adjourned the case till April 24, 2018 for mention.
