Two men assault police officer, one other in Lagos

Two men namely, Teco Benson (33) and Friday Michael (25) were on Thursday arraigned before an Apapa

Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting a police officer and one other person in Lagos.

Benson and Michael are facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy and assault.

The prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Bassey, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on February 4, 2019 at about 3pm at Maza-Maza Motor Park, Old Ojo Road, Lagos.

“The defendants conspired together with others at large to unlawfully assault one Anthony Oghrodi by using a plank with nails to hit him on the left hand which caused him serious injury,” Bassey said.

The prosecutor also said that the defendants resisted and assaulted one Inspector Tonueyi Philip while performing his lawful duty as a police officer.

According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 411, 173 and 174(b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges against them.

Magistrate A.S Okubule granted the defendants bail in the sum of N50,000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

The sureties, according to the Magistrate, must furnish the court with evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The sureties must be resident within Lagos State.

She adjourned the case till March 4, 2019 for mention.
