Vehicles imported into the country through the Car Park C gate of Five Star Logistics terminal, Tin can Island port no longer exit the gate with fake document without payment of customs duties, so says officer in charge of the gate, Chief Superintendent of Customs Njobdi Abdulmumeen.
Abdulmumeen, who disclosed this to newsman in his office on Monday, stated that there has been tremendous improvement in clearing of vehicles at the gate adding that cases of car vandalism as was in the past has also been addressed.
“When I took over, I knew the challenges that I will meet and I was prepared for it. I thank God that today I can proudly tell you that we have been able to manage all the problems in car pack C. The stealing of vehicles and vandalism is not here again; as far as we are concerned, not at this gate. We ensure that all vehicles passing through this gate pays duty,” he said.
He said the improvement in operations at the park was made possible through high level security by ensuring that only those who have genuine business to do at the terminal are allowed access.
He said despite claims that importers now channel their vehicles through Cotonou ports; there has been increase in the number of vehicles cleared at the car park in recent times which has translated into higher revenue for the command.
“We have a lot of vehicles at the moment. In fact we have been so busy since this January so it is not possible for me to say there has been reduction in importation of vehicles,” he said.
He noted that the officers at the car park now enjoy cordial relationship with customs agents adding that the level of compliance by the agents has also increased.
Meanwhile, Abdulmumeen was Monday awarded the Distinguished Corporate Achievers Gold Award.
Organizers of the award, Corporate Citizens Communications Limited, publishers of corporate news magazine at a brief ceremony held at the conference room of the Tin Can Island Port command said Abdulmumeen’s nomination for the award was in recognition of his contributions to the development of the Nigeria Customs Service through dedication and hard work.
