Maersk Line has taken delivery of a new vessel named Vilnia Maersk.
The 3,600 TEU containership was built by COSCO Zhoushan Shipyard, China.
Equipped with three docks, nine quays and two slideways, COSCO Zhoushan Shipyard was established in 2004 and is currently one of the biggest yards within the COSCO Shipyard Group.
Vilnia Maersk is the sixth in a series of a total of seven Baltic feeders Maersk’s brand Seago Line plans to deploy in the North Sea and Baltic Sea. It was classed by Lloyd’s Register.
At 200 meters long and 35.2 meters wide, the ships have been described as the world’s largest ice-class container vessels, designed specifically for operation in winter conditions and temperatures of down to -25 degrees C.
Apart from their stronger hull, they are characterized by high refrigerated cargo intake.
In 2018, Venta Maersk, Vilnia Maersk’s sister vessel, became the world’s first commercial containership to venture through the Northern Sea Route.
Maersk said its decision to send one of its boxships to transit the route was a trial run aimed at collecting scientific data.
Vilnia Maersk is the second ship to be delivered this year by the yard.
COSCO Zhoushan Shipyard handed over a 113,000 dwt crude oil carrier to Greek Aegean Shipping, named Green Aura.
